Dust: Part 2

”Hey man, you home? Where’s your bike?” Rick inquired as he knocked briefly and opened the door.

“Huh? Isn’t it out there?” Keegan always kept his bike in the shared garage area of the apartment building, as he didn’t really have anywhere else to keep it.

“Nope, no bikes.”

“Did I leave it at work?” Keegan mumbled half to himself as he headed to the door to see for himself.

“Dude, how could you come home and forget to bring your ride home with you?”

“I don’t know, I wasn’t feeling well last night and my memory is a bit fuzzy.” Truth be told, he only now realized just how fuzzy it was. Finding himself in the woods without recalling going for a walk had been confusing enough, but now he wasn’t sure he remembered arriving home at all. Sure enough, a quick scan the area proved fruitless. “Yea… I’ve just been absent minded lately. I’ll look for it later…” He mumbled, turning back to look at Rick.

Rick was a fairly large young man, not really chubby, not really muscular, but somewhere in between. As usual, he wore athletic shorts, some sports themed shirt, sandals, and… binoculars? “Hey what’s with the binoculars?”

At that question, Rick grinned. “I’ve got a pal who can get us on top of that tall building on 5th street, which happens to be just outside the quarantine zone. I figured we could go have a look.”

That plan was strangely… not ridiculous. Huh, for once Keegan could find no reason to try escaping. In fact, he rather liked the idea. “I guess we could do that. I’m actually kind of curious about what the fuss is all about. Plus then I can see if I left my bike at work.” Rick stared at him suspiciously for a few seconds. “What?”

“You aren’t gonna try to get out of it? No fake reasons you need to stay home?” Rick teased.

“Nope, let’s do it. Just let me grab my camera… And who says they’re fake?”

[REDACTED] is used as a base component in several different experiments. It binds to key locations in the subject’s nervous system and monitors for a specific signal. It must be exposed and fixated on an isolated sample of the desired signal before being introduced into the subject’s system. When the fixated signal is detected it releases [REDACTED], which is used by the different experiments in various ways. It is primarily designed to monitor the state of the subject’s body, but we are currently exploring potential usages involving directly receiving mental impulses.
